New Perspectives on Lisbon

How can we find abstract compositions in our urban environment? My own approach is to watch out for color contrasts, shadow-play, lines, and patterns. Ideally, more than one of these elements come together and join to a synergistic piece. In the post-processing phase, certain features can be accentuated: be it a rotation of the original photograph, the targeted adjustment of light, shadow, and color, or even the sharpening of textures.

In this project, the interplay of black and white and color photography is portrayed. Always on the borderline of abstract and concrete architecture, the series plays with
color contrasts, accentuating shadows, and unusual perspectives.

In a World of Black and White - and Color

The goal of this project is to highlight unusual perspectives on the
city of Barcelona with its variety of abstract architecture.

Recently, I decided to expand my photographic repertoire by
not only capturing photographs in 1:1, but also in the 4:3 and 3:2 format.

These new formats offered new exciting possibilities for portraying
the facades and helped to widening my view on a building´s characteristics.

The cities we live in, as concrete as they might seem, are full of abstract geometric forms. A concrete street 1000 times crossed in the morning, can turn into an abstract paradise when the afternoon sunlight causes an extravaganza of shadows and new angles.

The City is Abstract

In this small series of photographs I want to portray the variety of methods that I use to create an abstract feeling in my photographs.

At the heart of my approach is the freedom from objective context, the interplay of colors, and of course the composition of geometric patterns. As you will see, rotation of a photograph is another powerful method to create an abstract feeling.

The photographs were made in the cities of Berlin and Munich.

About the Many Different Ways to Geometric Abstraction

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Barcelona, the capital city of Catalonia.

Besides the abstract and minimal shots that I have taken in the city, I decided to also capture more concrete photographs that portrait Barcelona and its diversity.

Let´s start the journey through modern and antique buildings, views from the mountains and the sight to the beautiful sea, the sunny and the rainy days.​​​​​​​

Gropiusstadt (Berlin)

Berlin and Warsaw, 518 kilometers linear distance.

Two weeks ago, I visited the capital city of Poland. I never was in Poland before, although Germany is so close. I am quite glad that I went there. Lots of beautiful architecture and people.

In this project, I will give you some impressions from my Warsaw journey. This will be accompanied by architectural shots from Berlin. The two cities go well together, if you ask me. Poland, you will see me again!

The Beauty in the Details

The Internet is full of rules on how to compose a photograph. "10 Top Photography Composition Rules", "The 10 rules of photo composition", and "Compositional Rules" are only some examples that popped up on my screen. Whereas I think that these "rules" can be a useful guide for the beginner, I think that strictly following them (as suggested by the term "rule") can seriously impede your success in finding interesting angles, interconnections, and the true character of a picture. Therefore, I want to advocate to follow gut feelings more often, to try out different things without considering the rules, or said differently, to break the rules - at least sometimes!
